As I come to the end of my third month as Library Director, I’ve come to appreciate libraries so much more than I could have imagined. Although I have always had fond thoughts about libraries, being the book lover that I am, I never fully realized the impact and importance libraries have. We are so much more than just a building with some books inside.

We are a place where people can stay connected. We provide free access to the internet for those who may not have it at home. We are a stopping point for visitors who need to make a quick work call on vacation. We are a resource for families visiting the area who may not have internet but want to check out a DVD and enjoy a movie together.

We are a study spot for students who need a quiet place to get some work done. We are a testing room for students taking dual enrollment classes. We are a place for StoryTime, bringing little ones into the library encouraging early literacy.

This past month, having students back in the building has brought a whole new level of energy to our library. The halls are lively, the students stop in to visit, and I’ve even had the privilege of reading to two tenth grade classes a children’s book that I was introduced to during my children’s literature class in college.

Next week, the fifth and sixth grade students from St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, just down the road, will be visiting us as well. They will be using the library to find reputable books and information for their schoolwork. 

This is why I am so proud of our School & Public Library. We provide support, information, resources, and a place for our community and students. We are so very happy to do so.
