Looking to curl up with a good book as the leaves change and the temperatures drop? In need of a recommendation? Then you’re in just the right place. Whether you’re looking for a book that makes you question some of your life choices or one that throws you onto a remote island, we have a book for you here at MSPL. And if none of these are your cup of tea, don’t fret! Come down for a visit and we’ll have plenty more recommendations waiting for you.

One novel I’m sure you’ve heard of already, and for good reason, is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Nora Seed finds herself in the Midnight Library, where she is given the opportunity to see how her life could have turned out if she had made different choices. The books within the library allow Nora to experience different versions of her life, each one shaped by a different decision. Before her time is up, she must decide what the best way to live really is. The Midnight Library gets you hooked from the very first sentence: “Nineteen years before she decided to die, Nora Seed sat in the warmth of the small library at Hazeldene School in the town of Bedford.”

Looking for something with higher stakes? The Guest List by Lucy Foley might just get your heart rate up. The novel takes us to a remote island off the coast of Ireland for none other than a wedding. Jules Keegan and Will Slater are a power couple hosting what appears to be the perfect wedding, with every detail carefully planned. However, when tensions begin to rise and the weather takes a turn, the worst is yet to come. No surprise here, someone ends up dead by the end of the night, and we have to keep reading to find out what happened. 

Just watched The Five-Star Weekend? Elin Hilderbrand, along with her daughter Shelby Cunningham, bring us our next fall read. The Academy takes place at Tiffin Academy, an elite boarding school in New England. However, when the school suddenly jumps from number seventeen to number two on the list of best boarding schools in the country, things seem a little off. The campus is beautiful, the class sizes are small, but something isn’t quite what you would expect from the nation’s second-ranked boarding school. Before long, bumps in the road begin to appear, and a new app called Zip Zap has everyone looking over their shoulder. No one, whether student or faculty, is safe from having their secrets exposed. And I hear it leaves you wanting more.

Last but not least, I have a YA novel that might just be added to your to-be-read list. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is set before and after a devastating pandemic. Sound familiar? Jeevan Chaudhary walks home as a terrible flu begins to spread. Hospitals are flooded, gunshots ring out, and their lives begin to disintegrate around them. The novel moves back and forth in time, following a small troupe performing Shakespeare and music for scattered communities of survivors. It’s an interesting concept that will keep you turning the pages. 

As summer winds down and we find ourselves with a little more time to ourselves, I hope some of you turn to a good book. And if you’re struggling to add to your to-be-read list, stop down and visit us at the library. We will all most likely have a recommendation or two!
