Library News - My Love of Reading and Library Title Feature
Do you remember when you fell in love with reading?
I have been a reader for as long as I can remember, but my taste in books has certainly evolved over time. Back in grade school, I loved reading Johnathan Rand’s Michigan Chillers and American Chillers. I loved how each chapter left you on a cliffhanger, always making me want to read more. Eventually, I shared that love with my third grade students, where we read Johnathan Rand novels and completed book reports.
From there, I fell in love with the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I loved listening to Laura tell her stories and imagining a life so wildly different from my own. I could almost hear Pa playing his fiddle in my head. Little did I know that one day I would be reading Little House in the Big Woods with my third graders and making pancake men to celebrate the end of our first class novel.
In middle school, I remember coming to the library to check out a book. What I didn’t know was that it would set me on a path to reading historical fiction for quite a while. Between the Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys follows fifteen year old Lina as she and her mother and brother are taken away by Soviet guards. The novel, set in 1941, captured my curiosity while sharing the beauty of storytelling.
As I got older, my love for historical fiction grew and evolved. The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah hooked me on her books for years. She does such a wonderful job of blending storytelling with the history of the time. The Women is one of her novels that if you haven’t read yet, I highly recommend. The story follows a nurse who serves in the Vietnam War. It is quite the page turner.
The Winter Garden is one of my grandma’s favorite books, and I have to say it is one I enjoyed as well. The Four Winds takes place during the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. And last but not least, The Great Alone follows a family looking for a fresh start in the remote wilderness of 1970s Alaska. Each of these novels are ones I would happily go back and reread.
And now my reading has evolved once more. I am reading books from different genres and trying to expand my reading tastes. It is interesting to look back and see how my love of reading has grown and changed over the years.
