You Don’t Need to Finish Every Book, Library Title Feature

Library News - You Don’t Need to Finish Every Book and Library Title Feature
I’m going to start off by repeating, you don’t need to finish every book. At some point, we are probably all guilty of this feeling. You’re reading a book you’re not interested in, but instead of putting it down, you keep going. In my case, it will sit on the coffee table as I tell myself I’ll get back to it. Something else I am guilty of is getting too excited about a new book on my TBR (to-be-read) list that I just cannot wait to start. Sometimes, this ends in me starting a book while in the middle of another. When I am a good reader, I will rush and finish my current read first.
Sometimes reading can feel like a chore. You get distracted, pick up another book, and before you know it, you’re currently reading three different books. I hope I am not the only one guilty of this! So why do we do this? Is it okay?
Sometimes, we simply aren’t in the right headspace for a certain book. Wintertime? I am trying to lighten up the weather blues with something light and fun. Summertime? I want to escape to a beach (perhaps even on the beach) and just relax. Holiday stress? I want something that can make me laugh out loud. Who said we can’t go back and revisit?
What about rereading books? I have a series of books that I usually read every year in May. Why? The first time I read them was in May, and I think there is something nostalgic about reading them at the same time each year. Maybe I’m trying to transport myself back to that feeling I had when I first read them.
Isn’t that what we are striving for when we read? A connection? A feeling?
At the end of the day, we all have a DNF pile. For those who may not know, DNF stands for “did not finish.” And if you don’t have one, good for you! I didn’t use to have one either. However, I have to remind myself that it is okay to not finish a book I’m not enjoying. Life is too short to spend our limited reading time forcing ourselves through books we don’t like. There are way too many good books out there waiting for us to dive into their pages.
So, if you’re stuck in a reading slump, don’t be afraid to put down the book that isn’t working for you and try something else. And if you don’t know what that something else should be, come visit us at the library. We might have one or two suggestions for you, or more likely, a whole lot more.
Happy reading, whether you finish the book or not!
